HENRI MATISSE. Rare ALS: "H Matisse" on verso of 4x5¾ postcard. No place, 1950 December 20. To Mrs. Alexander. In French, translated. In full: "Thank you very much for the jams and cheese. My best wishes to you and a happy new year 1951." Verso depicts his color oil Portrait de Madame M. a la rai verte ("Portrait of Mrs. M[atisse] with a Green Line"). At the time of its completion, this painting, one of Matisse's most famous, was very controversial, and it proved to be the turning point in modern painting.
